A Prosperous Life Starts Here!

Skills and knowledge development

Our philosophy on which core skills to prioritise draws from thoughtful dialog and research with businesses experts that recruit or would be interested in recruiting business graduates, both in Uganda and globally.   We believe that current business school education, both in Uganda and in many international business schools, does not adequately cover these skills, many of which, we would class as “soft” management skills.  These will be a priority in the IHSU Business School curriculum and will supplement the more traditional business school functional subjects.

Examples of aspects of skills development that we prioritise are:

  • Integrity: helping students consider their own moral purpose, and develop an approach to ethical principles in the workplace—both in public and in private.

  • Cultural understanding: helping students learn how to interact successfully with people from different cultures and in diverse cultural settings.
  • Critical thinking: helping students to organize their thinking and approach to drawing conclusions from analysis and synthesis, in an effective way
  • Communication: helping students to communicate effectively in both written and verbal forms
  • Working with risk and uncertainty: helping students to be able to make “tough” decisions which involve risk, and to develop resilient responses when encountering problems
  • Team working: helping students to understand team dynamics and to work effectively in teams
  • Creativity: helping students to think creatively, particularly when seeking solutions to problems

Execution: helping students to develop strategies for getting things done effectively, by themselves and through others

The School of Business & Applied Technology aspires to usher in a new way of training and tooling business professionals.
